5 Destination Wedding Spots for Dreamers

Having recently celebrated my 3rd wedding anniversary (yay!), I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic. More so, I’ll be attending my very first destination wedding this May and I’m super excited. While I wouldn’t trade my own wedding for anything, I’m looking forward to relaxing in the Mexican sun minus the insane pressure that often comes along with being the the bride-to-be. If you love travel nearly as much as your significant other (I kid), then consider taking the leap…or in this case, the flight…and say your vows with a view. Here are 5 of the most romantic locales, IMO.

1) Jamaica

There are so many reasons why I love Jamaica, starting with the people. Locals have such a zest for life and their positive attitudes are contagious. With so many good vibes, your marriage is already off to a great start. While I haven’t been everywhere in Jamaica, I did really enjoy my stay at Couples Swept Away in Negril and actually met a girl whose sister got hitched at the resort. Negril is a quiet part of the island and lends well to small ceremonies and like many of Jamaica’s resorts, there’s a wedding planner on-site to help with all the arrangements. Come time for Save the Dates, give your guests ample time to set flight alerts and find the best deals.

2) Curacao

Curacao is one of the most fascinating islands I’ve visited and for this reason (among many others), I’d recommend it as a destination wedding locale. Curacao is a culturally-diverse nation. It’s a Dutch island in the middle of the Caribbean and the locals speak four languages fluently. I once assumed that all islands in the Caribbean looked mostly the same but Curacao has a dryer landscape, which would make for some great wedding photos I think. Downtown Willemstad is crazy colorful, and a great spot for a rehearsal dinner or day-after brunch. Santa Barbara is among Curacao’s top resorts for weddings and honeymoons and quite luxurious, too.

3) Maui

Maui might be in the United States, but it feels world’s apart. The island (along with Hawaii’s other islands) is a popular spot for lovebirds. In fact, when I spent a week exploring Maui, I was surrounded by couples nearly everywhere I went. From nightly Luau’s to star-gazing excursions, there is no end to the amount of ways to entertain your wedding party. There are plenty of resorts to choose from, but I’m partial to The Fairmont Kea Lani Resort where I stayed three years ago. Wailea is a relatively quiet area in Maui and one of the island’s most luxurious spots. Plus, if you host your wedding here, it makes honeymooning on Hawaii’s other islands a whole lot easier.

4) Italy

I’m not sure about you, but I can’t think of a more romantic setting than a small villa in Tuscany, can you? Italy is so many things for so many people and that’s just part of the country’s magic. Whether touring Venice by Gondola or walking through the Coliseum in Rome, it’s hard not to fall in love with the romantic culture. If you choose Italy as your destination of choice, make sure to plan with enough advance notice. Organizing a wedding in another country often requires more logistics, so be patient! It will all be worth it when you get to dress up and walk down an aisle of vineyards. Otherwise, save up for an Italian honeymoon, instead.

5) Georgetown, DC

Full disclosure, I got married here! I’m putting Georgetown on the list not only because I had a wonderful wedding there but because a destination wedding doesn’t mean you need to leave the country. There are so many beautiful settings right here in the United States like Savannah, Charleston and Boulder. While Georgetown wasn’t a destination wedding for me (I was Baptized in this church and born a few minutes drive away) but it was for my husband’s family. They flew in all the way from Argentina and adored D.C. for all the reasons I took it for granted. So, if an exotic getaway isn’t in the cards for you, consider saying your vows in a city closer to home.
